Foreign trade of Azerbaijan (January-October 2013)

The foreign trade turnover with 147 world countries amounted to $28.8 billion in January-October 2013, or 5.1 percent more than in January-October 2012. The volume of exports increased by 0.93 percent to $19.92 billion compared to the same period of 2012. The volume of import increased by 15.83 percent and hit $8.88 billion. Azerbaijan exported 1,915 products, and imported 5,960 different goods. As of Jan.-Oct. 2013, the nominal index of export exceeded import. This formed the foreign trade surplus to the amount of $11 billion.

As in previous periods, oil, gas and oil products were mainly exported from Azerbaijan in Jan.-Oct. 2013.

Most of Azerbaijan's exports as of Jan.-Oct. 2013 (84.66 percent) fell to the export of crude oil.The exports of crude oil decreased by 0.05 percent compared to Jan.-Oct. 2012.

The export of oil products decreased by 7.05 percent during this period. As of Jan.-Oct. 2013, around 4.93 percent of total exports from the country fell to the oil products.

Some 23.093 million tons of oil were transported via the Heydar Aliyev Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) pipeline, 3.363 million tons - the Baku-Supsa pipeline, 1.495 million tons - via the Baku-Novorossiysk pipeline and 801,599 tons were shipped by rail to Baku-Batumi in January-October.

In January-October 2013 gas exports from Azerbaijan (control device data) hit ​​81.99 percent of export for entire 2012. As of January-October 2013, the share of gas in total exports amounted to 3.01 percent (3.09 percent a month earlier) compared to 2.71 percent for whole 2012.

According to the State Customs Committee, gas exports from the country amounted to 5.732 billion cubic meters in January -October 2013. Around 668.995 million cubic meters were exported in October compared to 627.794 million cubic meters in September.

Around 2.555.042 billion cubic meters of gas to the amount of $599.969 million were formalized upon the cargo customs declarations. The exports increased by 26.88 percent compared to the first 10 months of 2012. Around 190.819 million cubic meters of exported gas worth $42.055 million were formalized in October.

Azerbaijan exported chemical products to the amount of $46.02 million in January-October or by 64.88 percent less than in the same period of last year. The figure hits 0.23 percent of a total export volume.

In this period, the highest amount of export fell on Italy. Thus, during the reported period Azerbaijan exported commodities to Italy totaling $4.875 billion which makes up 24.47 percent of total exports. Mainly oil and oil products are exported to this country. Indonesia ($2.520 bln) and Thailand ($1.549 bln) hold leading positions. Italy has maintained its leading position since 2008 excluding early three months. Turkey took a lead in January and U.S. in February and March 2008.

Russia ranks first on largest import volume ($1.278 billion) in Jan.-Oct. 2013. About 14.41 percent of the Azerbaijani imports fell to it. Turkey ranks second - $1.209 billion and Great Britain - third ($ 1.025 billion).

Most of Azerbaijan's imports or 25.15 percent in the reporting period fell to the import of machinery, equipment, electrical equipment and spare parts. The machinery and equipment worth $2.23 billion were imported in January-October or by 8.22 percent more than in the same period of last year.

Many vehicles and parts worth $1 billion (the share in the total imports - 13.91 percent) and wood and wooden goods - by $256.08 million (a 21.10 percent increase, the share in the total imports - 2.88 percent) were brought in the country.

Azerbaijan imported wheat flour to the amount of $17.56 million in January-October or 0.20 percent of total imports and exceeds the index of the same period of last year by nearly 13 times. According to the report, imports of wheat increased by 59.65 percent - up to $346.20 million per year or 3.90 percent of the total import volume of the country during this period.

According to the State Customs Committee, Azerbaijan's foreign trade turnover with CIS countries in Jan.-Oct. 2013 amounted to $3.342 billion or 11.6 percent of total volume of Azerbaijan's foreign trade turnover. Exports to the CIS countries for the period totaled $1.208 billion by increasing by 28.88 percent and imports - $2.133 billion by increasing by 24.04 percent. As a result, the country had a red ink in trading with them to the amount of $0.924 billion.

Thus, Azerbaijan's foreign trade turnover with EU countries amounted to $12.406 billion in January-October 2013, or 43.1 percent of the country's foreign trade turnover.

Around 45.3 percent of Azerbaijan's foreign trade turnover fell to the countries-non EU and CIS members in January-October or $13.045 billion.

In January-October Azerbaijani exports to the EU countries amounted to $9.393 billion, or 47.16 percent of total exports ($19.921 billion) amid a 1.48 percent decrease. Imports from EU ($3.012 billion) increased by 44.14 percent and hit 33.93 percent of total imports ($8.877 billion). As a result, the country had a trade surplus with the EU at the level of $6.381 billion or 57.8 percent of the country's trade surplus ($ 11.044 billion).

In January-October, exports to the countries-non EU and CIS members increased by 0.57 percent - up to $9.318 billion or 46.78 percent of total exports. Imports increased by 0.11 percent and hit $3.727 billion or 42.03 percent of all imports. As a result, the country received surplus worth $ 5.591 billion with these countries.

During this period, about 6,332 legal and physical entities were involved in foreign trade operations, including 3,616 - legal entities and 2,716 - physical entities.

The share of public sector in exports totaled $18.6 billion (93.35 percent), private sector - $1.157 billion (5.8 percent), the share of physical entities - $167.94 million (0.84 percent).

The share of public sector in import operations amounted to $2.22 billion (30.73 percent), the private sector - $5.72 billion (64.44 percent), physical entities -$424.01 million (2.1 percent).
