Review of Transport sector in Azerbaijan (January 2017)

Some 16.7 million tons of cargo were carried by Azerbaijani modes of transport in January 2017, which is by 4.3 percent more than in January 2016, the Azerbaijani State Statistics Committee’s report said.

According to the report, the volume of non-oil cargo increased by 5.1 percent and reached 12.1 million tons.

Around 77.1 percent of the total volume of goods transported accounted for the private sector during this period.

Some 57.1 percent of all cargo were transported by vehicles, 31.3 percent - by pipelines, 7.7 percent - by railway, 3.8 percent - by ships, 0.1 percent – planes.

Some 141.4 million people used passenger transport in January 2017, which is by 2.7 percent more than in January 2016. Most of the passengers were transported by vehicles (87 percent), metro (12.8 percent) and the rest part – other modes of transport.

Automobile transport takes the lion share in the transport field of the country. Some 9.5 million tons of cargo were transported by vehicles during the reporting period, which is by 2.3 percent more than in January 2016.

Some 122.9 million people were transported by vehicles during the reporting period, which is by 1.9 percent more compared to January 2016. Some 96.5 percent of the passengers were transported by buses and 3.5 percent - by cars.

Freight turnover by vehicles increased by 2.3 percent during the reporting period, while passenger turnover - by 1.9 percent.

Some 1.3 million tons of cargo were transported by railway in January 2017, which is by 20.7 percent more than in January 2016.

On average per day, the number of loaded carriages made up 358 and unloaded - 452.

Average daily load of carriages in the northern direction is 13,700 tons, in western direction - 4,800 tons and in southern direction – 1,600 tons.

Around 641,100 tons of cargo were transported by ships in January 2017, which is by 51.3 percent more than in January 2016. Some 38.9 percent of the transported goods accounted for oil cargo.

The volume of goods handled in Azerbaijani ports amounted to 894,700 tons in January 2017.

The volume of international transit cargo handled in the country’s ports reached 94.1 percent. As of February 1, 2017, around 32,900 tons of import cargo left in the ports for transportation.

Despite bad weather conditions Azerbaijan Caspian Shipping Company transported 4,676 wagons through its vessels in January 2017, which is by 58 percent more than in the same period of 2016.

According to the data, 3,237 wagons transported dry cargo, while 1,439 wagons - liquid cargo. The total volume of transported cargo is 300,520 tons.

During the reporting period, 1,368 vehicles were transported by sea, which is by 15 percent more than in January 2016.

In total, 201 trips were made in different directions in January 2017, 21 of such trips were made through Ro-Ro vessels, 180 - through ferries compared to 142 trips in the same period of 2016.

Around 1,204 passengers were transported by sea in January 2017, which is by 167 people more than in the same period of 2016.

Over 3.54 million tons of oil were transported via main oil pipelines in January 2017. Some 80.1 percent or 2.84 million tons of transported oil accounted for BTC.

Some 426,500 tons of transit oil were transported via BTC in January 2017.

Gas transportation via main gas pipelines made up 2.33 billion cubic meters in January 2017, which is by 10.2 percent more than in January 2016. Some 29.9 percent of the transported gas accounted for the South Caucasus Pipeline. Some 695 million cubic meters of gas were transported via this pipeline.

Some 146,700 passengers were transported by air transport in January 2017 which is by 28 percent more than in January 2016. Some 0.1 percent of shipment by this kind of transport accounted for the private sector.

Some 18.1 million people were transported by metro increasing by 8 percent in January 2017 compared to January 2016.

Some 50.3 million tons of cargo were transported through the Eurasian transport corridor TRACECA (Europe-Caucasus-Asia) in 2016, the committee said.

Around 62.6 percent (31.5 million tons) of the total volume of transported cargo accounted for vehicles, 27.4 percent (13.8 million tons) – railway, 10 percent (5 million tons) – ships. Some 15.7 percent (7.9 million tons) of cargo accounted for transit.
