Agriculture in Azerbaijan (January-September 2017)

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev signed a decree on additional measures in connection with the development of the production of citrus fruits, tea and rice in September. The purpose of the decree is to accelerate the development of production of citrus fruits, tea and rice, more efficient use of potential opportunities in this sphere and arise the interest of the population in the production of products.

The executive bodies of the Lankaran, Sheki, Yevlakh, Agdash, Astara, Bilasuvar, Goychay, Lerik, Masalli, Ujar, Zagatala and Zardab districts were instructed to determine land plots suitable for cultivation in agreement with the ministry of agriculture, ministry of ecology and natural resources, the State Committee for Property Issues and other relevant central executive bodies.

The agricultural production volume in actual prices amounted to 5.29 billion manat in Azerbaijan in January-September 2017, which is by 19.5 percent more than in January-September 2016.

According to the Azerbaijani State Statistics Committee’s report, the crop production increased by 13.0 percent (2,706.4 million manat), while livestock production – 16.6 percent (2,589.2 million manat) in the reporting period.

Plant growing

During the reporting period, the grain and legumes were mainly harvested in the country.

As of October 1, 2.68 million tons of grain were harvested from a 938,200-hectare-area (99.7 percent of the sown area), which is 5.4 percent less than in January-September 2016.

An average of 28.6 centners of grain was harvested from each hectare. 178,700 tons of corn were harvested from a 28,600-hectare-area.

According to the report, as of October 1, 862,500 tons of potatoes were harvested (a decrease of 0.97 percent), 1.22 million tons of vegetables (an increase of 6.1 percent), 434,000 tons of melons and gourds (a decrease of 6.0 percent), 3,700 tons of tobacco (an increase of 19.3 percent).

As of October 1, 29,800 tons of sunflower were produced in the country. Moreover, 173,400 tons of sugar beet was harvested from a 38.1 percent-sown area.

During the reporting period, 553,300 tons of fruits and berries, 109,600 tons of grapes, 574.7 tons of green tea were harvested.

Production of fruits and berries increased by 2.6 percent, green tea production - by 11.0 percent and grape production - by 35.6 percent in Jan.-Sept. 2017 compared to Jan.-Sept. 2016.

Moreover, 438,200 hectares were plowed for autumn crops.

Cattle breeding

So, 353,100 tons of meat in live weight, 1.52 million tons of milk, 1.30 billion pieces of eggs and 15,700 tons of wool were produced in the country in January-September 2017.

Meat production increased by 3.4 percent, milk production by 1.2 percent, egg production - by 7.3 percent, wool production by 4.4 percent in January-September 2017 compared to January-September 2016.
