Georgia, Tbilisi / corr. Trend N. Kirtskhalia/ Georgian Frontier Guards have arrested four Armenians at check-points Krasni Most and Akhalitsikh on the Georgian-Armenian border. They were arrested during examination of passports, the border police of Georgia said. The four Armenian citizens entered Georgia illegally, via the illegal check-point Nijni Zaromag in the Ossetian section of the Georgia-Russian border. The examination of the Armenian citizens' passports revealed that they did not have the border stamp of the customs services of Georgia. A case has been filed over the fact.

This is the first arrest of foreign citizens for illegal entry to the country in 2008. 360 people were arrested for the same charges in 2007. Most of them were Armenian and Russian citizens. The large majority of violators aimed to use Georgia as a transit country; however, due to official check-points at the Georgian/Russian border, they have to enter Georgia through illegal check-points in the Abkhaz and Ossetian sections of the Georgian/Russian border.
