Armenian Parliament rejects opposition’s draft amendments to Electoral Code

On Wednesday, the National Assembly of Armenia rejected a bill 'On Amendments and Supplements to the Electoral Code of Armenia' introduced by 'Heritage' opposition faction, News-Armenia reported.

41 MPs voted for the bill, and 66 voted against it; one member of the parliament abstained.

The bill stipulated that, within two days after the election lists signed by voters from all sites should be published on the official website of the CEC with the possibility to search and download them.

On the eve, during the discussions of the bill, MPs from the ruling Republican Party of Armenia had opposed it.

Previously, the bill did not receive a positive opinion from the Standing Committee for State and Legal Affairs of the National Assembly of Armenia. Chairman of the Commission David Harutyunyan stated that the proposed amendments contradict with the Constitution of Armenia and violate citizens' right to a secret ballot.

One of the authors of the bill, a parliamentary of 'Heritage' faction Ruben Hakobyan said during the discussion of document on the on the eve that the recent elections had shown that most violations occur in the list.

The MP expressed bewilderment about why the authorities are preventing the opposition from seeing the electoral lists.

In addition to the "Heritage" faction, parliamentaries from 'Prosperous Armenia', ARF 'Dashnaktsutyun' and the Armenian National Congress also voted for the bill.
