The personnel of the 102nd Russian military base (RMB) located in Armenia will be formed exclusively by military personnel under the contract since the spring of 2016, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Russia told the Interfax agency.
"The last conscripts will leave the 102nd Russian military base stationed in Armenia in the spring of 2016," said the source.
A representative of the General Staff said that this decision was taken in 2014 and is not associated with the tragic events in Gyumri, where six people were killed in early January 2015. RMB serviceman Valery Permyakov is suspected in committing this crime.
The source said that since December 2014, the personnel stationed in Tajikistan in 201st RMB, is formed exclusively by military personnel under contract.
A thorough check of the moral and psychological qualities of soldiers sent to serve in foreign RMB may be carried out at the assembly points of military districts as well, according to the source.
