Baku, Azerbaijan, July 23

Trend:

An Armenian serviceman was wounded because of lawlessness in that country’s army, the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry told Trend July 23.

The Armenian media reports suggesting that the serviceman was wounded in a ceasefire violation on the line of contact are untrue, said the ministry.

Azerbaijan’s Armed Forces control the situation on the line of contact and observe the ceasefire, added the ministry.

The Armenian media spread reports July 23 saying the country’s serviceman Mher Ziloyan was allegedly wounded in a ceasefire violation by the Azerbaijani side.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations. Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts.
