The European Union has decided to extend the EU observer mission's mandate in Georgia for another year.

According to the EU representative office in Georgia, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton made this statement.
"The EU observer mission has made an important contribution to security and stability in Georgia and in the region over the past four years", Ashton said.

"I welcome the extension of the mission's mandate for another year," she added.

The EU observer mission has been operating in Georgia since 2009. Despite many efforts, the mission employees have been deployed only on the territory controlled by Tbilisi and monitor the security in the conflict zone with Abkhazia and South Ossetia. These separatist republics will not allow European observers to enter their territory.
