Georgian Chief Prosecutor offers new evidence against former Interior Minister

Chief Prosecutor of Georgia Archil Kbilashvili told reporters of the new details that appeared in the case of former Minister of Interior and Defence Minister Bacho Akhalaia and other high ranking military officials.

"Evidence of more than 10 witnesses, a crime scene report and other materials are proof of a crime having taken place. Given the new details, yesterday a charge was brought against Bachana Akhalaia, and the application for his arrest as a preventive measure was submitted to the court. Yesterday charges were also brought against Georgi Kalandadze and Zurab Shamatava.The prosecution seeks custody in regard of both of them, " the chief prosecutor said.

A trial will be held in Tbilisi City Court on Friday which will consider the detention of all three men.

Previously, they were charged with ill-treating soldiers. They are charged under part 3 of Article 333 of the Criminal Code of Georgia which includes abuse of power, followed by 'an insult to the personal dignity of the victim' the sentence of which can be from five to eight years imprisonment.

Akhalaia had additional charges filed against him under article 143 - 'illegal suppression of freedom'. This article carries imprisonment of up to 12 years.

Lawyers for the defendants say all three detainees deny the charges.
