The President of the European Parliament welcomes Georgia's attempts to build constructive relations with Russia.
President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz said about it during a meeting with prime minister of Georgia Bidzina Ivanishvili in Brussels, the press service of the Georgian Prime Minister said.
Georgian Prime Minister informed Schulz about the appointment of a special representative for negotiations with Moscow.
This decision was praised by the President of the European Parliament.
Ivanishvili said that he is waiting for reciprocal steps from Russia.
The parties also discussed the visa free communication, it was also noted that it is necessary to sign an association agreement during the EU summit in Vilnius.
The Georgian Prime Minister appointed a political scientist and diplomat Abashidze his special representative for the settlement of relations with Russia. Abashidze himself called the introduction of the post - willingness of the Georgian government to create a new independent channel of relationships with Russia.
Military action was launched in the Georgian territory of South Ossetia on Aug.8 in 2008. Later the Russian troops occupied the city of Tskhinvali and drove the Georgian military back. Russia recognised the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia in late August. In response, Tbilisi broke off diplomatic relations with Moscow and announced the two unrecognised republics as occupied territories.
