Georgian Foreign Minister Maya Panjikidze considers it acceptable to make changes to the country's constitution regarding the country's foreign policy. She stated this on Monday after a meeting with a delegation from the Latvian Saeima (parliment).
"Georgia's European direction is the choice of the Georgian people. But I am not an expert on constitutional law; saying what should be added to the Constitution and what should not goes beyond my authority. I believe the undoubtedly European direction desired by the Georgian people should be reflected in the Constitution. However, I repeat that I am not an expert and I cannot take the matter any farther," Panjikidze said.
The Minister also commented on an interfractional agreement on Georgian foreign policy, proposed by the chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Affairs, Tedo Japaridze, noting that it is a very interesting document that deserves discussion.
"I think these 14 clauses cover all that is of importance to our country. If the National Movement longs for cohabitation (peaceful coexistence of political parties), it is possible to work and discuss any document. This is the political culture that we have to implement, and I hope the document will be worked on," Maya Panjikidze said.
The Georgian parliamentary majority has offered a 14-section agreement to parliamentary factions regarding Georgia's foreign policy. Committee chairman Tedo Japaridze has already sent the working draft to all factions including the minority. The document is called an 'Agreement of parliamentary factions on Georgia's foreign policy'.
