Georgia is ready to help Russia in ensuring security at the Sochi Olympic Games, Georgian Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili told the media before a meeting with the diplomatic corps on Friday.

"We are ready to render the maximum assistance in holding the Olympics," he said. "We must try to ensure nothing will happen near our borders during the Olympic Games, as Sochi is very close."

The Georgian National Olympic Committee has already decided to participate in the Sochi Olympic Games. Georgia hopes to get seven licences to participate at the Winter Olympic Games.

Former Georgian authorities said the country is not going to participate in the Olympic Games to be held in Russia.

Large scale military actions were launched in South Ossetia in Georgia on August 8, 2008. Later Russian troops occupied Tskhinvali and expelled the Georgian military.

Russia recognised the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia in late August. Tbilisi ended diplomatic relations with Moscow in response and has announced the two unrecognised republics to be occupied territories.
