Georgia eyes to create digital national currency

The National Bank of Georgia (NBG) is working on the introduction of “digital Georgian lari” in the country, the Vice President of the National Bank Papuna Lezhava said, Trend reports via Georgian media.

According to the Vice President, the NBG has already met with about 100 technology companies regarding the project.

“Internal work is underway to establish a specific format, scale, and we will start working on a pilot project later this year,” Lezhava said.

The analysis process will also include clarifying and publicizing the specific characteristics of the digital currency, scaling it up, and launching the pilot project, or test mode, which will form the basis for the action plan and roadmap for the next stages of the project, he added.
