Egyptian beaches reopen after shark attacks

All of Egypt's beaches in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh reopened on Wednesday after a string of shark attacks forced them to close, DPA reported.

Separate shark attacks forced beaches to close after a German woman was killed and four tourists injured earlier this month.

However, even now the beaches have reopened, nets and ropes have been placed in the water to mark the maximum distance allowed to swim out and emergency patrol boats are stationed throughout the coastline, said local officials.

The government has also imposed a 50,000 Egyptian pound (8,600 dollar) fine on anyone caught feeding sharks, which is believed to be the reason behind the attacks.

The attacks are considered unusual for the Sinai Peninsula and the popular beaches of Sharm el-Sheikh, which is a major European tourist destination.
