EU's Ashton and Jordan's king discuss Middle East peace, Egypt

European Union's foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton and Jordan's King Abdullah II discussed the prospects of breaking the deadlock in the Palestinian-Israeli talks officials said.

Ashton was in Jordan as part of a regional tour which took her to Israel and the Palestinian territories and Beirut, following a visit to Tunisia, dpa reported.

"Discussions during the meeting tackled the latest developments in the region and means of boosting bilateral ties between Jordan and the EU," Jordan's royal court said in a statement.

"The monarch underscored the importance of the EU role in pushing forward peace efforts in the region on the basis of the two-state solution," it added.

On Wednesday, the king his Saudi counterpart, King Abdullah, in a telephone conversation discussed developments in Egypt, according to the statement.
