Norwegian army general named head of UN observers in Syria
Major General Robert Mood of Norway was appointed Friday chief of the UN Supervision Mission in Syria, which is called to monitor the ceasefire in the country, dpa reported.
The UN said Mood, who was appointed by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, has extensive command experience and knowledge of peacekeeping operations.
Mood is scheduled to arrive in Syria next week, bringing with him more unarmed military observers to strengthen the group of 11 observers already on the ground. The UN mission in Syria is authorized to deploy up to 300 military observers.
