Following a conference on the Syrian crisis in Geneva, it was decided that when resolving this problem it is necessary to avoid military intervention, the Arab States League and United Nations Special Envoy on Syria, Kofi Annan said at a joint press conference with Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi, Mehr news agency reported on Tuesday.

"When resolving the Syrian crisis it is necessary to lay down weapons on both conflicting sides as well as to avoid military intervention. The crisis should be resolved peacefully," Annan said.

He said ways of resolving the conflict were discussed at a meeting with Syrian President Assad. Annan said Iran plays an important role in resolving the Syrian crisis.

In turn, Iranian Foreign Minister Salehi said some countries are concerned about positive measures taken within the peaceful Annan plan, therefore they try to impede the special envoy's activity.

Anti-government protests have continued in Syria for more than a year.
They turned into an armed struggle between the opposition and units of the power structures of the country. Reports about new armed incidents and victims appear on a regular basis. This is despite the country having declared a truce since mid-April according to UN-Arab League special envoy to Syria Kofi Annan's plan.
According to UN, the total number of victims of the conflict in Syria has exceeded 12,000 people. About 230,000 people became refugees.
