US ties Hezbollah to al-Assad regime

The United States put fresh sanctions on Hezbollah Friday for its support of the Syrian regime of President Bashar al-Assad, the Treasury Department said, reported dpa.

Hezbollah has been training, advising and providing logistical support to Syrian government personnel since last year, the US said. It said Hezbollah's leader, Hasan Nasrallah, had overseen the efforts.

The group also helped Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps' Qods Force to train Syrian forces, and Iran has provided training and weapons to Hezbollah, the US said.

The US has listed Hezbollah as a terrorist group since 1995. It was already under separate sanctions, but the move clearly ties it to the violence in Syria.
