The situation in Syria is at a crossroads and escalation of the conflict may lead to the collapse of the Syrian government, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Monday, RIA Novosti reported.

"According to our assessment, the situation in Syria is at a crossroads. There are people who have set a course for further bloodshed and conflict escalation. All this may lead to the collapse of the Syrian government and population," he said at a press conference in Moscow.

Anti-government protests have continued in Syria for more than a year and half. According to the UN, the total number of victims of the conflict in Syria exceeds 70,000. More than 230,000 have become refugees with around three million in need of humanitarian assistance. Syrian authorities say they oppose the well-armed militants.
