At least 30 people died Wednesday in a spate of car bombings targeting mainly Shiite areas in the Iraqi capital, dpa reported.

The apparently synchronized explosions occurred in northern and eastern Baghdad and also left at least 100 injured, said security officials.

There has been a sharp rise in sectarian violence in Iraq in recent months.

The United Nations estimates that 1,057 people were killed in July alone, the deadliest month in more than five years.
