Russia has urged the leader of the National Coalition for Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces (NCR) Ahmad al-Jarba to ensure the coalition's participation in the Geneva 2 international conference on Syria. This the Russian Foreign Ministry reported on Monday on the results of a meeting between Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov with a group of NAC leaders, led by its head al-Jarba, in Paris on Sunday, ITAR-TASS reported.
"The Russian side expressed principal approach in favor of the earliest launch of the inter-Syrian dialogue through the convening of the International Conference on January 22, 2014 with the participation of delegations of the Syrian government and opposition without preconditions," the ministry said.
"The head of a leading group of Syrian opposition was strongly urged to assume responsibility and ensure the participation of the National Coalition represented by a major delegation of the opposition in the forthcoming forum in the interests of stopping the armed confrontation, for uniting all Syrians in the uncompromising fight against terrorism and for agreeing on the generally accepted framework of the transition to a peaceful settlement, according to the aspirations of all Syrian citizens," the Foreign Ministry added.
