An Israeli airstrike killed a Palestinian militant and injured another Sunday as they were about to launch a rocket into southern Israel, both sides reported, dpa reported.

Armed groups in the Gaza Strip responded by launching two Grad missiles at the southern Israeli city of Beersheba Sunday morning.

Ashraf al-Qedra, spokesman for Gaza's Hamas-run Health Ministry, said the injured Palestinian was in serious condition.Witnesses said the two were about to launch a rocket from al-Garara, east of Khan Younis, in the southern Gaza Strip near the border with Israel.

An Israeli military statement confirmed the airstrike and said the targets was making "final preparations" to launch a rocket at southern Israel.

The violence came after several days of calm, which followed a round of violence early last week that ended in an Egyptian-negotiated unofficial truce.

Schools were closed in Beersheba, the largest city in the southern Israeli Negev desert, as residents were ordered to stay close to protected rooms and shelters.

Sunday is the start of the school- and workweek in Israel.
