Netanyahu narrowly falls into sea during navy base visit: report

Israel Materials 17 November 2009 19:02 (UTC +04:00)

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, when visiting a navy base in the north port city of Haifa on Tuesday, slipped and narrowly fell into the sea when boarding an inflatable boat, local news service the Ynet reported.

Netanyahu stumbled when he went aboard the inflatable boat down through a ladder, and was caught by a guard alongside immediately, the report said, adding that the prime minister was just one step from falling out of the boat, Xinhua reported.

Despite the awkward moment, Netanyahu finished the tour to the base as planned, during which he stressed the concern of disobedience among the army.

"There is no place for disobedience," the prime minister was quoted as saying, "If you wish to dismiss the IDF (Israel Defense Force), promote disobedience, it could lead to the State's collapse."

Netanyahu's comments apparently referred to some IDF soldiers' protest against the army on Monday, saying that IDF forced them to evacuate Jewish settlements in the West Bank despite their own will.
