Swedish nurses prepare to strike

(dpa) - Several thousand Swedish nurses were Monday preparing to strike for higher wages after a government-appointed mediator gave up efforts to broker a deal over the weekend.

The labour action slated to affect 3,500 nurses was due to begin at noon (1000 GMT), the Swedish Association of Health Professionals said.

A special panel was, however, to rule if the industrial action constituted a threat to patients, and nurses were to remain on the job pending a ruling from the panel.

Patients were to be notified if scheduled operations were to be postponed.

Accident and emergency departments at the major hospitals in for instance Stockholm would close for a day each, meaning delays for patients without prior appointments.

The first accident department to close in Stockholm was at St Goran's hospital, Sweden's fourth largest emergency hospital.
