A doctor caring for the Egyptian mother who gave birth to septuplets said on Sunday that the mother and her children are in good condition, the dpa reported.

On Saturday, 27-year old Ghazala Khamis gave birth to septuplets in Al-Shatbi hospital in Egypt's coastal city of Alexandria.

The extremely rare case was a result of taking fertility drugs, the head of al-Shatbi Hospital, Emad Darwish, told Deutsche Presse- Agentur dpa.

Khamis entered hospital during the 26th week of her pregnancy.

"We tried hard to push her pregnancy until the 36th week," Darwish said.

The babies, four boys and three girls, weighed between 1.4 and 2 kilograms.

They are currently in an incubator and are being fed artificial milk, he added.

Other than the newborn septuplets, Khamis is a mother of three girls.

Her desire to give birth to a boy made her take fertility drugs, Darwish said.

Khamis is from a village in Beheira, 143 kilometres north of Cairo.
