After an accident killed at least 20 people on board a Russian nuclear submarine, the atomic reactor had escaped damage, the Navy spokesman Igor Dygalo said early Sunday, Interfax news agency reported.

The submarine of the Russian Pacific fleet was running under its own power toward a port on Russia's Pacific region, he said, dpa reported.

According to initial information, the accident was caused by defective fire suppression equipment. More than 20 people among the 208 sailors and civilians on board died in the incident.

Twenty-one people who were injured have been brought to safety onto an escort craft. The accident happened Saturday during a test cruise.
