The Hong Kong government is more unpopular than at any time since chief executive Donald Tsang took office three-and-a-half years ago, according to a survey Wednesday, dpa reported.

Nearly 38 per cent of people are dissatisfied with the administration's performance, the highest figure since February 2005, the survey found.

The slump in the popularity of Tsang and his team is largely linked to the economic gloom with only 25 per cent of people saying the government was maintaining prosperity and improving livelihoods.

Beijing-appointed Tsang took office in June 2005 after the resignation of his predecessor Tung Chee-hwa and enjoyed generally high popularity ratings for his first two years of office.

More than 1,000 people were interviewed for the survey by the University of Hong Kong, which does monthly polls under its public opinion program.
