Other News Materials 27 March 2009 06:57 (UTC +04:00)

A part of Situ Ginung lake dike in South Tangerang, West Java of Indonesia, gave away on early Friday morning, sending water to inundate houses in Ciputat and driving scores of local residents to evacuate, the Jakarta Post reported.

"Officers of the Ciputat Police office have evacuated residents to safer place," said local Police chief Ngisah Ashari, Xinhua reported.

He said that the police came to the area at around 02:00 a.m. local time (1900 GMT, Thursday) following report of the collapsed dike. Ngisah attributed the dike collapse to overflowing water after a heavy rain fall on Thursday evening.

The police have yet to report any damage or injuries in the incident. On the other hand, the national Antara news agency quoted Tien, a local resident, as saying that hundreds of houses have been inundated and there were also reports of deaths.
