At least eight people have been wounded in a suicide bombing near a major Nato base in southern Afghanistan, reported BBC.

The attacker blew up his minivan at a checkpoint outside Kandahar Airfield in Kandahar province.

The wounded included civilians and Afghan soldiers, reports say.

The attack came as thousands of US forces launched a major offensive against the Taliban in the neighbouring province of Helmand.

Afghan army corps officer Gen Shair Mohammad Zazai told AFP news agency that the bomber was on his way to Kandahar city when he was stopped at the checkpoint.

He detonated the car bomb while in a queue to be searched, Gen Zazai said.

No foreign soldier was injured in the attack.
