Police divers in Hong Kong were Saturday searching for the body of a 7-year-old boy after his suicidal mother jumped with him into the sea from a 17-metre bridge, DPA reported.
The divorced 38-year-old mother was found dead after jumping with her son from Hong Kong's Tsing Yi suspension bridge linking Hong Kong to Lantau Island on Friday afternoon.
Passing motorists saw the woman climb onto a railing with her son and plunge into the sea soon after she collected him up from his nearby primary school.
The woman was retrieved shortly afterwards but the boy's body is believed to have been carried away by strong currents.
A police spokesman said it was being treated as a suspected murder-suicide and is the latest in a series of recent cases in Hong Kong involving suicidal parents killing their children.
In early February, a 4-year-old girl was saved by a safety net after being thrown from the seventh-floor balcony of a shopping mall by her mother, who then jumped to her death.
Murder-suicides involving children have increased as parents believe it is more cruel to leave their children behind alone than to kill them, experts say.
