A storm swept across the Czech Republic and neighbouring Slovakia on Saturday, killing one person and causing damage to cars and power lines, local news agencies reported.

The victim was a cyclist who died instantly when hit by a falling tree in the Karlovarsky kraj region of the Czech Republic, the Czech news agency CTK said.

Numerous cars were damaged by trees uprooted by strong winds in the east Slovakian capital of Kosice, the state-run Slovakian news agency TASR reported.

Transport was affected in both countries by upturned trees that blocked rail lines and roads, dpa reported.

Thousands of people were left without electricity in the western Bohemia region when falling trees brought down power lines.
