Russian paratroopers would remain in Kyrgyzstan at least until parliamentary elections took place in October, Russian Airborne Forces Commander Vladimir Shamanov said Thursday, Xinhua reported.

"The situation in this region is stable on the whole, but, taking into account that the parliamentary elections are planned there in the near future, the tasks will remain in place," Shamanov was quoted as saying by local media.

The Russian unit was deployed to Kyrgyzstan to enhance security following clashes between ethnic Kyrgyz and Uzbeks in June, which killed 300 people.

Thousands were forced to flee their homes in southern Osh and Jalalabad.

The country held a referendum on June 27, turning it from a presidential to a parliamentary republic with new interim leader Roza Otunbayeva taking power.
