Seven people were injured when prison wardens fired warning shots against 200 rioting inmates at storied
Folsom Prison in California, broadcast reports said Saturday.
The shootings occurred late Friday, CNN reported, quoting a spokesman for the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
Seven inmates were taken for treatment to hospitals near the city of Sacramento, the state capital. It was not clear what caused the riot, but prison spokesman Lieutenant Anthony Gentile indicated it appeared to have started on the handball court in the exercise yard, dpa reported.
In 1968, US country singer Johnny Cash put Folsom Prison in the spotlight with an album recorded live at a concert for the prisoners.
