Indian army has conducted a successful test of supersonic cruise missile during a military exercise in the state of Orissa, officials say, PressTV reported.

The upgraded version of the 290-km range BrahMos missile was fired from a testing range at Chandipur off the Orissa coast on Thursday.

"All telemetry and tracking stations, including naval ships near the terminal point have confirmed the mission's success," its director S P Dash said.

The missile, a joint venture between India and Russia, has been tested several times in the past as well.

BrahMos can be launched from submarines, ships, aircraft or land.

The name BrahMos is a portmanteau formed from the names of two rivers, the Brahmaputra of India and the Moskva of Russia.

Nuclear-capable India and Pakistan, which have fought three wars, two over the disputed Himalayan territory of Kashmir, routinely carry out missile tests but normally notify each other in advance under an agreement.

India and Pakistan have also occasionally tested conventional and unconventional weapons since their independence.

Both neighbors have refused to sign the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and other international regulatory pacts that restrict developing or testing nuclear weapons.
