US Navy disrupts pirate attack in Gulf of Oman

Two American warships thwarted a pirate attack on a merchant vessel in the Gulf of Oman, the US Navy said Friday, dpa reported.

The incident occurred after the Panamanian-flagged ship Duqm reported Wednesday that pirates were attempting to board the vessel, which was sailing in international waters, the Bahrain-based US Fifth Fleet said.

Two US ships in the vicinity, a destroyer and a cruiser, responded to the distress call, causing the pirates to flee on their skiffs.

After tracking the boats to their mothership, the navy confiscated and destroyed the skiffs in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions on piracy, the Fifth Fleet said.

The Navy allowed the mothership and pirates to go free, a spokesperson for the Fifth Fleet said.
