Chinese president meets Indian PM on bilateral ties

Chinese President Hu Jintao met Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Wednesday in Sanya City of south China's Hainan Province to exchange views on bilateral ties and issues of common concern, Xinhua reported.

Hu and Singh are meeting on the sidelines of BRICS Leaders Meeting scheduled for Thursday in Sanya. It is the first meeting between the two countries' senior leaders this year.

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao visited India in December and held talks with Singh. After the talks, China and India designated the year of 2011 as the "Year of China-India Exchange" and decided to hold a series of activities to help deepen bilateral exchanges and cooperation.

The two countries announced the establishment of their strategic partnership of cooperation in 2005.

China is India's largest trade partner. Bilateral trade leapt to 61.8 billion U.S. dollars last year from 18.7 billion U.S. dollars in 2005.
