A Marine Corps corporal went on a shooting spree at a seaside unit on Ganghwa Island, west of Seoul, on Monday, killing three and wounding two, a military official said, Yonhap reported.
The shooter, identified only as Kim, was also injured in the incident, he said.
The official said the shooting took place at 11:50 a.m. inside the barracks of the Marine Corps unit on the southern part of the island, close to the maritime border with North Korea.
The victims included a staff sergeant, a corporal and a lance corporal, while the injured were two corporals, including the shooter, and a private, the official said.
"The shooter himself sustained a minor injury," the official said. "The injured received first aid and were taken to a nearby hospital."
Marine Corps officials are scheduled to hold a press conference at the defense ministry around 3:30 p.m. on Monday to provide more details.
