The United States on Tuesday lauded the naming of an interim prime minister in Libya, DPA reported.
Libya's ruling National Transitional Council on Monday named Abdel-Rahim al-Keeb to head an interim government that is to oversee elections. He replaces Mahmoud Jibril, who had said he would step down once Libya was declared "liberated."
"We applaud the TNC's effort to move expeditiously now to the creation of a broader interim government," State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said.
"We're encouraged by the appointment of Prime Minister Abdul Rahim al-Keeb, and also his positive statements yesterday about the direction that Libya needs to go, including with regard to human rights."
