Syria civil war likely after UN move blocked - Hillary Clinton

The veto Saturday of a UN Security Council resolution on the violence in Syria would lead to the greater likelihood of civil war, US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said, DPA reported.

"It is difficult to imagine that, after the bloodiest day yet in Syria, there are those who would prevent the world community from condemning this violence," said Clinton. "And I would ask them: What more do we need to know to act decisively in the Security Council. The Syrian government has shown its contempt for the international community and, first of all, for its own population.

"I know what will happen. More bloodshed, increasing resistance by those whose families are being killed and a greater likelihood that Syria will descend into civil war. That is the outcome everyone must avoid.

"I thought there might be some way to bridge, even at this last moment, a few of the concerns the Russians had. I offered to work in a constructive manner to do so. That has not been possible."
