France on Sunday condemned as "unacceptable" the Syrian government's demands for "written guarantees" from the opposition before withdrawing troops from civilian areas by an April 10 deadline, DPA reported.

"After Bashar al-Assad's regime announced that it accepted the (Kofi) Annan proposal and itself proposed the date of April 10 for the withdrawal of its troops and heavy weapons from urban centres, it is now formulating new unacceptable demands," foreign ministry spokesman Bernard Valero said in a statement.

France, together with the international community, would have to "draw the consequences of the Syrian regime's refusal to cooperate," Valero said, expressing "full support" for former UN secretary general Annan.
