A strong earthquake rocked western Mexico Wednesday evening, the US Geological Survey reported.

The earthquake, which measured 7.0 on the Richter scale, hit at 17:55 local time (2055 GMT), with an epicentre 50 kilometres southwest of La Mira in the western state of Michoacan. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage, DPA reported.

The earthquake was felt as far as Mexico City, 384 kilometres away. In recent days, Mexico has been shaken by more than 300 aftershocks from a March 20 earthquake with a magnitude of 7.4.
