Fire gutted a garment factory in Pakistan's commercial hub of Karachi, killing at least 60 people, police said Wednesday, dpa reported.

The blaze started Tuesday evening and raged through the night, with firefighters using about 30 vehicles to control the blaze.

"Rescuers have recovered at least 60 bodies and they fear finding more," said Nawaz Gondal, a senior police official at the site.

About 35 workers escaped from the three-storey building that lacked safety exits, he said.

Rescue officials said most of victims died of smoke inhalation.

Some media reports mentioned the possible presence of more people in the basement, which had been flooded partially during the firefighting efforts.

The government of Sindh province, of which Karachi is the capital, announced a day of mourning.
