Trend:

Crash of Russia's Airbus А321 in Sinai, Egypt, which killed over 220, is a result of a terrorist attack, according to Alexander Bortnikov, head of Russian Federal Security Service.

"This can be clearly said to be a terrorist attack," RIA Novosti quoted him as saying Nov. 17 at a meeting in the Kremlin, held under the chairmanship of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Earlier on Oct. 31, an Airbus 321 of Russian airline Kogalymavia, which was flying from Egypt's Sharm El Sheikh to Saint Petersburg, crashed in Sinai.

The disaster, which is the largest in the Russian and Soviet aviation history, killed 217 passengers and seven crew members.

During the meeting, Bortnikov told Putin that the examinations of personal belongings and luggage of those who were in the aircraft, as well as the plane's elements revealed the trails of an explosive substance on them.

He added that an improvised bomb at a capacity of up to one kilogram in TNT equivalent exploded in the plane, when it was mid-air, as a result of which the plane started to "fall to pieces" and therefore the debris from its hull were scattered across a large area.
