An extreme winter storm hit Canada's eastern and central regions on Sunday, bringing icy cold winds and as much as 50 cm of snow, Trend reports citing Xinhua.

Environment Canada warned that road conditions might be treacherous in the storm-affected areas due to ice, snow and reduced visibility.

Environment Canada said the snow would turn to ice pellets and freezing rain Sunday afternoon or evening.

The storm also brought a rare combination of heavy snow, high winds and extreme cold to many parts of Quebec and southern Ontario.

Environment Canada issued a dual winter storm and extreme cold warning for the Canadian capital of Ottawa, which could see an additional 5 to 15 cm of snow along with chilly wind.

There have been dozens of delayed or canceled flights at airports in the regions, and many cities have warned drivers to avoid non-essential travel.
