The number of active drilling rigs in the United States decreased by 21 to 830 this week, down 238 rigs year-on-year, according to the weekly data released by Baker Hughes on Friday, reports Trend referring to Xinhuanet.com.

According to the Houston-based oilfield services company, these active drilling rigs included 696 oil rigs operating in the U.S. oil fields, down 17 from the previous week; 133 gas drilling rigs, down four from the previous week and the miscellaneous rigs remained at one.

Of the 830 rigs, 807 are land drilling rigs, down 20 from the previous week, 21 offshore drilling rigs, down one, and inland waters drilling rigs remained at two.

Of them, 51 are directional drilling rigs, 728 are horizontal drilling rigs and 51 are vertical drilling rigs.

During the week, Colorado was the only state that saw an increase of rig count. The number of drilling rigs in Colorado added one to 25, while Oklahoma and Texas led the lost with six and five, respectively.

The number of horizontal drilling rigs this week decreased the most by 17, down 199 rigs year-on-year.

By far, the Permian basin has been the largest source of shale oil production growth in the United States, which has become the engine of supply growth outside the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries in the past years.
