Turkey, Ankara, 10 March / Trend corr A. Alaskarov/ Islamists are creating the scarf-related problem in Turkey, the Turkish ex-President Suleyman Demirel said to the Eko Enerji magazine.
Demirel said that the problem with hijab (women's Islamic scarf) is used by Islamists to reach their ambitious goals. And it is wrong to consider the problem in terms of democratic freedom, because it is not such harmless as it seems to be. "That is a means used by the Islamists to implement their plans on establishing of a State based on religious principles," he said.
According to Demirel, even after changing the adequate article in the Turkish constitution, the disputes about wearing the scarf are still on-going. He hoped for the problem not to lead to a split of Turkey's population into two adversarial camps.
