U.S. President Barack Obama on Tuesday called Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan to congratulate him on the recent election victory of his party, the White House said in a statement.
The statement said President Obama called Prime Minister Erdogan from Air Force One to congratulate him on the "historic victory" of his party in Turkey's parliamentary elections on Sunday, Xinhua reported .
"The leaders noted the rich partnership and warm friendship between the United States and Turkey, and agreed to continue working closely together to develop an even stronger bilateral relationship," the statement added.
Turkey's ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) won the parliamentary elections held on Sunday, gaining national votes of 49.9 percent with 326 seats in the parliament.
