Turkish ministry announces data on passenger traffic via new Istanbul Airport

The new airport in Istanbul served 14.3 million passengers from January through July 2020, the Turkish Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure told Trend on August 10.

During the reporting period, more than 4.3 million passengers were served on domestic flights, and over 9.9 million passengers were transported by international flights.

The ministry noted that during this period, 109,795 flights were carried out through the new Istanbul airport, including 33,755 on domestic routes and 76,040 on international flights.

"From January through July 2020, the volume of freight traffic through the new Istanbul airport amounted to 459,084 tons, of which 43,105 accounted for domestic flights and 415,979 for international flights", the ministry said.

New Istanbul Airport served 52.6 million passengers in 2019.

The opening ceremony of the new airport was held in Istanbul on October 29, 2018. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Mehmet Cahit Turhan attended the ceremony.

Istanbul's third airport is located in the northern part of the city.
