Baku, Azerbaijan, Jan. 24
By Jamila Jafarova - Trend:
NATO could benefit from cooperation with Azerbaijan in energy security, Special Representative of the NATO Secretary General for the South Caucasus and Central Asia James Appathurai told Trend.
"Azerbaijan is the most active NATO partner country on energy security issues," he said.
"I can also see potential for more NATO-Azerbaijan cooperation on training and education in the field of energy security," he said. "NATO is planning to establish its first training course on energy security at the NATO School in Oberammergau."
"Azerbaijan organised a number of expert workshops on this topic," Appathurai said.
He said that energy vulnerabilities are part of emerging security challenges that both Allies and partners are currently facing.
Appathurai said that while NATO is not an energy institution and considers infrastructure protection primarily a national responsibility, it closely follows energy developments with security implications for the Alliance.
"Terrorist threats to energy infrastructure, as well as increasing cyber attacks against energy installations are of significant concern to some Allies and many of our partners, including Azerbaijan," he said.
