Iran studies opportunities of joining TANAP

Baku, Azerbaijan, Apr. 21
By Umid Niayesh - Trend:

Presence in global gas markets is the Islamic Republic's principal policy, Mohsen Pak Ayeen, Iran's ambassador to Baku told Trend April 21.

He further said that the Islamic Republic holds the second biggest gas reserves in the world after Russia.

Iran holds 33.8 trillion cubic meters of proven natural gas reserves- or 18.2 percent of the world's total proven reserves.

The ambassador also confirmed that Iran has received offers about participating in TAP and TANAP projects.

The president of Azerbaijan's State Oil Company Rovnag Abdullayev told reporters Apr. 4 that Iran is interested in purchasing a stake in the Trans-Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline (TANAP).

Iranian experts at the oil ministry are studying the issue, Pak Ayeen said, adding while the final decision was made on the issue it will be shared with public.

It should be noted that Iran and the P5+1 (the US, UK, France, Russia, China, and Germany) reached a nuclear framework agreement on April 2 that raised hopes for achieving a comprehensive nuclear deal by July 1 and lifting of international economic sanctions on Iran, including the EU restrictive measures against oil and gas export.
